Abstract:
Abstract To its promoters, the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), also known as cell switching, is the best available on-premise internetworking technology. Its high bandwidth, uniform switches are workhorses for multimedia. They can transfer graphics, audio, video and text from application to application at much higher speeds than now available. The asynchronous aspect of this technique lies in the fact that a single channel does not send the information in synchronized time slots. By all likelihood, the asynchronous transfer mode will be the more extensive implementation of fast packet switching.
