Abstract:
Abstract The invention of new technologies, as well as new materials, can signal the birth or the extinction of an entire industry. For instance, silicon chips decimated the vacuum tubes business, and optical fibres are rapidly replacing the telecommunications market for copper wire. Because of supporting the display of many types of information — like moving images and animation, along with the more classical voice, text and data — multimedia applications displace older technologies. This substitution is taking place not with a big bang, but at a relatively rapid pace. Hence, the rush to mergers and alliances of which we spoke in Chapter 1.
