Abstract:
Abstract In 1899, the head of the US Patent Office resigned, protesting that there could not possibly be anything left to invent.1 Looking at inventions of the 1800s that had influenced communications it is easy to understand his position. For seemingly overnight the world was able to communicate across towns, states, countries and oceans at a speed that was revolutionary.
