Abstract:
Abstract It can’t be defended except as mob rule. Maybe the country doesn’t know it yet, but I think we may find that we’ve been in a revolution more drastic than the French Revolution. The crowd has seized the seat of government and is trying to seize the wealth. Respect for law and order is gone (Bernard Baruch’s comment on Roosevelt’s abandonment of the Gold Standard in 1933, quoted in Schlesinger, 1959, p. 202).
