Introduction

Nancy Hubbard

A chapter in Acquisition, 1999, pp 1-5 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract At least one in three employees will, during the course of their working life, undergo an acquisition or merger. Yet statistics show that roughly half of acquisitions are not successful. In the current drive to enhance shareholder returns, value is consistently being destroyed by companies acquiring and their management not fully understanding how to undertake the process successfully, often making the same mistakes over and over again. This book will offer some best practices for those embarking on acquisition, based upon four years of research into acquisition success and failure, the research of others, as well as personal experiences based upon my consulting career. Included are five true case studies which illustrate not only how one acquires successfully but also what happens when it goes horribly wrong.
