The Leader as Strategist

Peter Wickens

Chapter 3 in Energise Your Enterprise, 1999, pp 41-51 from Palgrave Macmillan

Strategy is here and now [my emphasis]. This misconception leads people away from action into interminably long planning cycles. One of Jack Welch’s early actions when he took over at General Electric was to dismantle the corporate strategic planning group. He pronounced the corporate strategy to be the now celebrated, ‘No. 1 or No. 2 in every market we serve.’ That is all the strategy GE needed!
