Developing People in the Right Way

Neville Bain and Bill Mabey

Chapter 4 in The People Advantage, 1999, pp 46-65 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The first obvious truth is that the practice varies. This is due in some cases to the size of the company and in others to the degree to which this is an agenda item of the most senior management. We have seen the extremes where at one end the development of people is a high priority and business processes are firmly in place to see that this is addressed on a regular basis. At the other end little is done by the organization, thus leaving the onus on the individual to be proactive. The evidence available is that even in the more successful companies managers spend insufficient time devoted to management development.
