Abstract: Abstract Like many other Victorian rationalists, Edward Spencer Beesly had an evangelical upbringing. He was born in 1831, in Feckenham, Worcestershire. His father was the Rev. James Beesly, a man of devout religious persuasions and severe moral standards.
