Income Levels and the Structure of Trade

Michael Michaely and Gary Hufbauer

Chapter 3 in The World Economic Order, 1981, pp 121-164 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Certain goods are naturally expected to be exported by rich nations, and other goods by poor; likewise, some goods are expected to be imported primarily by rich countries, and others by poor. Does a good exported by rich countries tend to be also imported by their likes—or by their poor partners? What are the possible explanations of the income level of exports and imports? And how do these explanations square with a priori theories of the determinants of the pattern of international trade?
