Observations, Recommendations and Conclusions

Chapter 7 in Reversing Economic Decline, 1981, pp 167-178 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract As we wrote this book, it became abundantly clear that the scope of our subject — the social choices exercised in five economies through the financial system in the use of savings for investment — was so large that it threatened to exceed the 60,000 words we had set ourselves as a desirable length. We therefore had to restrict the scope of detailed discussion in order to attempt to provide a balance between what we saw as the five crucial subjects of savings sources, social choices, investment factors, economic stability and the role of financial institutions. The balance we have struck is essentially subjective, and we hope it will let our readers see the entire economic picture as best we can describe it.
