Balance-of-payments Adjustment in LDCs

Graham Bird

Chapter 6 in The International Monetary System and the Less Developed Countries, 1982, pp 114-141 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In this chapter we examine a number of questions relating to the balance of payments of LDCs. These concern the major causes of balance-of-payments problems; the basic policy alternatives, adjustment and financing, which are available to countries experiencing balance-of-payments problems; and the ways in which balance-of-payments adjustment may be achieved. Most attention will be focused on the appropriateness of exchange-rate variation as a tool of adjustment in LDCs.
