Work and Pay

Guy Routh

Chapter 7 in Economics, 1984, pp 115-163 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The question, ‘What is work?’ may seem too obvious to merit consideration. There must be very few people who have never done any. But, because it is at the very foundation of economic systems, one of the main (if not the sole) determinant of exchange value, it is worth spending a little time to get it into focus. And, as Yves Simon wrote, ‘The daily life of man is composed of things whose meaning is hidden in the mystery of familiarity. Work is one of these.’ (Work, Society, and Culture, ed. Vukan Kuic, New York: Fordham University Press, 1971, p. 1.)
