Decisions (2): Television News

Alastair Hetherington

Chapter 5 in News, Newspapers and Television, 1985, pp 87-115 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract From the cross-section of news judgements provided in the previous chapter, it is evident that on some nights there is nearunanimity. A common perception is most likely when there is ‘hard’ news, particularly in the political and economic fields. It is evident also that within a single organisation — ITN or BBC — there can be diversity of treatment. The pluralism of Channel Four News in reporting the Greenham women’s protest week, contrasted with the sociocentralist approach of News at Ten, is one such example.
