A chapter in The Economy of Ghana, 1989, pp 1-32 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The book describes and discusses the sad story of Ghana — a nation rich in natural resources and human potential — which in the early 1980s was in a critical economic situation, the culmination of steady decline for over a decade. This is particularly unfortunate, for at the time of its independence in 1957 hopes were widely entertained that Ghana would prove to be the ‘show-piece’ of African economic development, a model for others to follow.
