Chapter 4 in The Economy of Ghana, 1989, pp 81-107 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Agriculture is by far the largest sector of the Ghanaian economy. At constant prices, its contribution to GDP was 46.5 per cent in 1970; by the early 1980s its share stood at around 55 per cent (see Chapter 2). In 1960 the sector engaged 61.5 per cent of the total labour force. By 1970 the share had declined slightly to 57.0 per cent. About 23 million hectares of land are suitable for agriculture, although currently only about 3 million hectares are under cultivation.1
