Abstract:
Abstract By 1984 the total external debt of Eastern and Southern Africa was approximately 21.2 billion US dollars. This compares quite favourably with that of Brazil alone which was 107.3 billion US dollars in the same year. Within Africa, the region’s debt is similar to that of Nigeria which was 19.3 billion US dollars in the same year. Perhaps a better way of exposing the real burden would be by using the ratio of interest to export earnings as shown in Table 33.1. The table gives comparative figures for Eastern and Southern Africa’s most indebted countries against the ten most heavily indebted developing countries using the same ratio.
