Chapter 1 in The Great Russian Fair, 1990, pp 14-33 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The Volga served from ancient times as a principal trade route from Northern Europe to Asia. Long before the establishment of Russian power over this river, fairs existed along its banks, at Itil, capital of the Khazars, at Bulgar, capital of the Volga Bulgars, and at other locations. The Mongol invasion brought a temporary halt to trade along the Volga, but by the fourteenth century there appeared a whole new group of periodic markets or fairs scattered from the mouth of the Mologa River to Sarai.1 One of these fairs took place in the immediate vicinity of Nizhnii Novgorod.
