Chapter 6 in Implementing a Human Development Strategy, 1994, pp 96-102 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Historical patterns of economic development have produced rapid economic growth in a number of countries for an extended period of time, but these patterns of development also have caused the stock of natural capital in the world to contract considerably and often to become degraded. In addition, there has been a rapid loss of biodiversity. Lastly, there has recently emerged a serious threat of global warming. In the last two decades people have become increasingly aware of the social costs associated with production processes and consumption patterns that harm the environment and this has given rise to demands that henceforth growth should be sustainable.
