Chapter 1 in A Japanese Approach to Political Economy, 1995, pp 1-10 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract What all of the authors who have contributed essays to this anthology have in common is that they have studied with or been influenced by the work of Thomas Sekine to various degrees. Sekine studied with one of the most prominent and influential Marxian political economists in post-World War II Japan: Kozo Uno (1897–1977). He then left Japan and studied in Canada and England, finally settling in to a teaching career at York University, Toronto, where he has taught since 1968. Although the once large and significant Japanese Uno School is today largely in a state of decline within Japan, this book attests to the fact that at least one branch of it is very much alive and vital. Ironically, given the rootedness of Uno Theory in Japan, it is arguably the Canadian branch that today is doing the most to develop the legacy of Uno. And this is largely due to Sekine’s theoretical contributions.
