Introduction
Charles Harvey
Chapter 1 in Constraints on the Success of Structural Adjustment Programmes in Africa, 1996, pp 1-6 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract As noted in the Preface, this book originated in the selection of seven doctoral students from Africa (from those countries where Sweden had an aid programme) to work, together with their supervisors, on topics related to structural adjustment. Although their detailed fieldwork could be, and was in several cases, microeconomic or sectoral, it was considered unproductive to research such issues without also understanding macroeconomic conditions. The point is that when macroeconomic conditions and policy are satisfactory, they can safely be ignored if the researcher wishes to concentrate on sectoral or microeconomic detail.
