Abstract:
Abstract The South Asian region comprises Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. These countries all share historical, geographical, cultural and economic links. They are all developing countries, their per capita income on average being less than US$650. To develop economically they will need to cooperate with each other and with countries outside the region in a range of policy-making areas, but especially in trade. Trade has been recognised by all countries of the region as a pivotal means of expanding the resource base, furnishing economies of scale, reducing information costs and leading to more cost-effective production.
