Abstract: Abstract The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) first became involved in trying to standardize the tools used in environmental management when the ISO Committee of Council on Consumer Policy (COPOLCO) became concerned about the proliferation of eco-labelling schemes in the late 1980s and their lack of compatibility with one another. ISO’s subcommittee on environmental labelling, ISO/TC 207/SC3, is attempting to establish agreed procedures and principles to underpin all current and future eco-labelling schemes, and this is aimed at providing some of the infrastructure necessary for the schemes to move closer together. This is a long-term project and, for the present, there is still considerable diversity among operating schemes.
