The Origin of the Debate
Roberta Rabellotti
Chapter 2 in External Economies and Cooperation in Industrial Districts, 1997, pp 11-22 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter presents an overview of the Italian debate which originally prompted the research on industrial districts. Behind this debate and the ensuing research stood the structural transformation of the Italian economy which took place during the 1960s and 1970s. As shown in section 2.2, some previously backward regions of the country experienced a rapid industrialization process. The traditional dualist structure of the Italian economy was deeply altered, leading to the perception of the existence of a ‘Third Italy’ and of the key role of SMEs in its development.
