Chapter 7 in Regional Blocs, 1997, pp 158-195 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The European Union (EU), the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the now defunct Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON) of the former East European communist countries, represent three examples of regional economic cooperation in Europe. These groupings are the subject of this chapter. Unlike other regional groupings examined in Chapters 3 to 6, the European Union is a unique example of deep integration. It is also the oldest and arguably the most effectively functioning case of economic integration (though, as we shall discuss, not necessarily the most conducive to the globalization of trade).
