Overseas R&D Laboratories in MNEs: An Analysis of their Roles and Motivations

Abstract:
Abstract To further investigate the position of decentralised R&D in MNEs the Pearce and Singh survey (see Chapter 4) supplemented the evaluation of the parent laboratory viewpoints through a complementary questionnaire that was sent to the overseas units themselves.1 This chapter presents selected evidence from this subsidiary laboratory survey. The next section begins the review by providing broad perspectives on the positioning of these labs in their MNEs’ global technological and competitive strategies through their evaluation of the relative importance of various roles in their operations. Following this, section 5.3 assesses in turn the manner in which those roles reflect the ways in which various factors are influencing the development of the labs. The next two sections investigate the possibility that such labs achieve their distinctive position through two different dimensions of integration, firstly into the technology strategy and programmes of their MNE group and secondly from collaboration with hostcountry scientific institutions. Finally section 5.6 draws some conclusions from this evidence.
