The Role of Consulting Knowledge in the Transformation of Work in Contemporary Europe
Roger Penn
Chapter 9 in The Diffusion and Consumption of Business Knowledge, 1998, pp 220-228 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The present chapter is part of a wider project that is examining contemporary consulting firms in Europe. This project is seeking answers to three inter-related sets of questions. First, we are seeking to understand the reasons that lie behind the emergence and current growth of consulting firms. What is the relationship between the development and evolution of the large corporation and the rise of consultancy firms (see Chandler, 1962)? What is the connection between the growth of the modern state, its increasing role in economic affairs and the nature of consultancy activities (see Jessop, 1982)? How far can the rapid growth of consultancy services (see Palmer et al., 1990) be characterized as a part of a wider set of processes that can be labelled as flexibility? In other words, how far can one conceptualize the growth of consultancy services as part of a process of ‘distancing’ by firms whereby they shed ‘peripheral’/‘non-core’ activities to specialist service providers (see Atkinson and Meager, 1986; and Penn, 1992b)?
