Chapter 7 in Wage Differentials, 1998, pp 210-238 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The purpose of this chapter is to investigate wage determination and differentials in the UK. The first part studies how wages are distributed among different occupations and professions. In other words, wage differentials by occupation and profession are analysed. The second part investigates how wage differentials by occupation are determined with an emphasis on the effect of education on the determination of occupational attainment and wages (or earnings). At the same time, the effect of family background on these variables and the role of hierarchical positions or status are investigated in determining wages. A recursive model with discrete variables consisting of family background, formal education, occupation, hierarchical position and wages is estimated to draw the implications of the above effects. Finally, the issue of wage determination in the UK is evaluated based on this chapter and earlier studies.
