Multinational Corporations: An Historical Account

Mira Wilkins

Chapter 3 in Transnational Corporations and the Global Economy, 1998, pp 95-133 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Multinational enterprises (MNEs) have a long history and have long had an influence on the development of the economies in which they operate. Their impact is on the ‘home country’ (where they originate), on ‘host countries’ (where they extend their business operations), and on ‘third countries’ (to which the contribution spread). In this paper, I will concentrate on the impacts on host countries (or more simply ‘hosts’). MNEs serve to integrate the world economy in a manner different from trade or finance per se; they form a tissue linking economic activities in home, host, and third countries. There is not the mere transfer of goods or personnel or intangibles or capital; rather there is an ongoing, continuing relationships. MNEs are and have long been significant actors on the world stage.1
