Chapter 2 in Swiss Banking, 1998, pp 20-41 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The thoughtful reader must surely have been struck by a historical parallel which exists between the mediaeval economies of Europe and the modern vision of a united Europe with a single currency. Indeed, the European Monetary System, with its anticipated economic union, does bear a remarkable resemblance to the same Europe which existed prior to the emergence of nation states. There are obvious differences in detail, history does not repeat itself with exactitude, but the similarities are sufficient to remind us that there is really very little that is completely new in human endeavour.
