Chapter 4 in Swiss Banking, 1998, pp 63-84 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract We have attempted to uncover those roots of the Swiss banking system which lie deep in the history of Europe. In this sense, the Swiss and their banks share the common political and economic ground of all Europe, except for that unique position of the Swiss which developed after the disastrous 1515 defeat of the Swiss army at Marignano — its famous neutrality. There is yet another root, a philosophical background, which has its own origins and which was also influential in determining the unique character of the Swiss banks. Once more, though, we should stress the substantive difference between the Swiss bank of the nineteenth century and the ‘credit banks’ which had developed so extensively in Great Britain, because it is precisely this difference that is the distinguishing characteristic of Swiss banking. This will become clear in the following pages.
