Chapter 4 in Making a Living in Rural Sudan, 1998, pp 57-83 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract During the last few decades, food insecurity has grown in Sudan. Drawing from research on the famine of 1983–85 in western Sudan, causes of famine and how peasants cope are discussed in this chapter. The analysis of peasant action under stress is assumed to provide information on the relation between food security and long-term livelihood security and on the scope and limits of peasant livelihood-securing activities.
