Chapter 1 in Flying the Flag, 1988, pp 1-17 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In the late 1950s the major airlines of France, West Germany, Belgium and Italy got together to form what became known as Air Union. The aim was to coordinate operating schedules and quotas between the different countries and eventually, with the development of the European Economic Community, to create a fully-fledged European airline. There was a strong belief that only such an integrated undertaking would have the strength and resources to stand up to competition from the major American carriers. Instead of several national airlines, Europe would have a single operator the equal of Pan American Airways.
