Overall Import Levels of the Industrialized Countries

Abstract: Abstract The preliminary analyses in chapter 3 indicated that population size and wealth indeed had a clear influence on overall levels of imports as expected, but additionally there were other factors present since the relationships were only partial ones. In order to determine the relative openness of the industrialized countries to imports, the actual levels of imported goods per capita were used, controlling for population size, wealth, membership in the EC/EU, and membership in EFTA. Analyses of actual per capita import levels with these controls provided some indications of what the effects of government policies in different countries had been. There were also changes over time as well.
