In Search of Euro-capitalism

Abstract: Abstract Capitalism grew up in Europe and has colonised many parts of the world. This chapter examines several issues relating to its current development in its birthplace. First, it considers the extent to which the various European economic systems are tending to converge on one conceptual or historical model. The differences between them are deeply rooted in history, and yet changes in the global environment may be encouraging them to become more like each other. Second, it looks at whether a clearly identifiable supranational ‘Euro-capitalism’ is emerging to replace or overlay the national variants. As the European Union has developed politically and economically, policy has been made cooperatively and common bodies of law have been created. It is worth considering whether these together amount to a new kind of capitalist system. Third, this chapter discusses the extent to which any of the European varieties of capitalism are ‘popular’ in nature; in particular, in pursuit of the main theme of this book, it asks whether the identified changes in the broader European political economy are taking capitalism closer to or further from the wishes and control of its citizens. Fundamentally, if Euro-capitalism exists, does it empower the people?
