Chapter 1 in Japan and East Asia in Transition, 2003, pp 1-12 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Japan has stood at a unique position in East Asia.1 It has long been the sole developed nation in the region. In particular, its economic power has been preponderant, accounting for roughly two-thirds of total gross domestic product (GDP) in East Asia. Japanese trade, investment and official loans have sustained economic growth in major East Asian countries and ‘virtual’ economic integration in East Asia.
