Chapter 2 in Beyond Capital, 2003, pp 16-26 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Consider that picture of capitalism presented in the last chapter. Based upon historical experience, is there any reason to reject Marx’s analysis of the nature of capital? Should we scuttle the idea that capital rests upon the exploitation of workers, that it has an insatiable appetite for surplus labour, that it accordingly searches constantly for ways to extend and intensify the workday, to drive down real wages, to increase productivity? What in the developments of world capitalism in the last two centuries would lead us to think that capital is any different?
