Banking in China: The Institutional Framework
Lawrence Sáez
Chapter Chapter 2 in Banking Reform in India and China, 2004, pp 15-35 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The state plays an important role in the management of financial services, principally in banking, insurance, and the securities market. In transition economies like China and India, the role of development-oriented banks is more critical. Theoretically, banks can often play an important role in fostering the incentive structures of SOEs by monitoring their practices in line with commercial principles. In practice, though, state banks often serve as a channel for the proliferation of soft budget constraints of other firms.
