Chapter 6 in The Political and Economic History of North Cyprus, 2019, pp 151-170 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Social security and the retirement laws in a country are indicators for how nations are treating their citizens. Although social security and retirement laws have been generous in northern Cyprus, they were economically inefficient and unsustainable. How successive governments in northern Cyprus have ignored parliamentary statutes and pushed the social security system to the brink of bankruptcy is described. This chapter introduces the key amendments in related statutes, provides some essential data regarding the number of contributors and beneficiaries from the system and signals the underlying financial vulnerability of the entire social security system.
