Chapter Chapter 1 in Private Bankers in the Italian 19th Century, 2020, pp 1-31 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter presents the evolution of the banker in Italy, with special focus on the nineteenth century, analyzes a general historical background of the banker’s role in Italy from early medieval times, and provides a thorough review of the existing literature on Italian banking history. The focus regards the role of bankers in Italy before unification (1861), highlighting their strong operational skills and solid international relations. These qualities are far from negligible, indeed they elevate the bankers to the role of haute banque. The role of credit and financial operators in the Kingdom of Sardinia is fundamental, helping to establish the predominance of the Genoese business center on the peninsula, with strong international networks.
