Chapter Chapter 5 in Private Bankers in the Italian 19th Century, 2020, pp 131-170 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter describes how the role of Italian and especially Genoese private bankers changes from the post-unification decade, similarly to their European counterparts. The ever-increasing need for resources by states, industrial companies, and joint-stock companies requires sums that individual professionals cannot or do not want to guarantee. The cases of the Parodi bankers and other bankers operating in the Ligurian area are still emblematic of these changes. In general, therefore, the role of private bankers changes after the Italian unification. While maintaining a significant turnover, compared to previous decades, they lose their primary role in the economic and financial policies of the Kingdom of Italy and in the organization and management of large public loans.
