Chapter Chapter 1 in Landscape History and Rural Society in Southern England, 2021, pp 3-16 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract A central issue in rural history is what geographical units are to be studied. Single parishes suffer from problems of representativeness, while the alternative of generalising risks vagueness. The rationale for choosing the history of groups of parishes is stated and the localities underlying the present study are listed. Agriculture’s necessary prominence in landscape history is emphasised. Stress is likewise placed on investigating apparently minor practices and products and their broader significance for economic history.
