Chapter Chapter 2 in Landscape History and Rural Society in Southern England, 2021, pp 17-24 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract A case is made for including physical remains in the landscape alongside standard documentary sources, with attention to the reciprocal support they provide. Topics included are abandoned industrial sites, religious buildings, country mansions and old farmsteads that can still be found. The loss or damage to many such structures and to the contents of museums is deplored but the sheer volume of survivals is nevertheless celebrated.
