Chapter Chapter 6 in Landscape History and Rural Society in Southern England, 2021, pp 59-78 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Evidence is provided about an unsuspected but fluctuating reclamation of marginal land. Extensive patches of gorse on the New Forest heaths were found to be bounded by banks and ditches, revealing previous occupation of Crown land where it was officially disallowed. Parallels are drawn with agricultural incursions on nearby private heathland, which imply dates for the New Forest examples. Next, the intricate nature of heathland utilisation and products in the London area are considered and the issue raised as to whether ecology or institutions conduced to encroachment. The ‘colonisation’ of a comparable area near Newbury is described. Finally, the inadequate conservation of heathland (outside the New Forest) is debated.
