Chapter Chapter 13 in Westernization Movement and Early Thought of Modernization in China, 2022, pp 253-264 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract To transform China from a traditional to modern society, it is also necessary to reform traditional into modern business. International trade was an insignificant section of the national economy of the Qing Dynasty before the Opium Wars. After the First and Second Opium Wars in 1840 and 1860, the advanced officials and ideologists of Westernization realized the international trade could trend to enhance the national power, and this trend is irresistible. However, the low competitiveness of Chinese goods led to a huge trade deficit between China and Western countries. Therefore, the thought of developing modern business became a significant section to strengthen the national economy since the Westernization Movement.
