Chapter Chapter 2 in Westernization Movement and Early Thought of Modernization in China, 2022, pp 25-38 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract A question worth discussing is: What are the guiding principles of the Westernization Movement? In the author’s opinion, the guiding principles are “cementing relations with western countries, conducting domestic reform,” and “Confucianism leads the basics, while western science leads the techniques.” The first two principles tell us to improve the external environment to create a favorable condition for internal reform, while the latter indicates how to conduct internal reform, namely what should be changed and to what extent. Every reform needs to address these questions. Regarding the modernization thought of the Westernization Movement, the question arises as to how to deal with the relationship between traditional Chinese culture and the introduction of Western learning.
