Abstract:
Abstract During the nineteenth century, Britain attempted to secure its hegemonic position in India in the face of Russian threats to the north and Dutch and French threats to the Bay of Bengal. The fear of a Napoleonic attack on India radically changed British policy, and Britain adopted a much more aggressive approach by eliminating the autonomy of independent local principalities and stationing British troops in those territories.
