Chapter Chapter 9 in Social Support Systems in Rural Italy, 2023, pp 231-250 from Palgrave Macmillan Abstract: Abstract Located at the northeastern edge of the Republic of Venice, Friuli was characterized throughout the early modern period for a lack of large cities, with the sole exception of Udine. Small cities were distributed along the principal circulation route, the Pontebbana road connecting Venice to areas across the Alps, but the bulk of the population lived in over 900 rural villages. Hospitals, institutions which are traditionally identified as the earliest form of social support, were located in the population centres along the principal roads. The forms of social support available to the people of Friuli as a whole were the fruit of local community institutions. This chapter addresses the centralized urban architectural form of the village based on closeness and the varied landscapes of the region as the basis for solidarity: both of these factors influenced the formation of social support systems. Lastly, we discuss charitable bequests aimed at providing education to children in the mountain areas, which were characterized by the significant seasonal migration of the male working population.
