Chapter Chapter 14 in Brazilian Crops in the Global Market, 2023, pp 385-399 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Why was Brazil a century behind the other great agricultural exporters such as the United States, Canada, and Australia? This is one of the questions dealt with in this chapter. We also explore the questions of productivity in crops and labor and how agriculture is now the fastest growing sector of the national economy. Unlike industry it survived the opening of the economy in 1990 and has expanded ever since. Because Brazil imports few agricultural products, it has the highest balance of trade of any major agricultural exporter. This has enabled Brazil to compensate for a declining industry and a mostly negative balance of trade in most of the other sectors of the economy. We also provide estimates of the future growth of agricultural production in the next several decades.
