Abstract: Abstract In the past 50 years, South America has emerged as the dominant world producer of soybeans, a crop of no significance in the region before the middle of the twentieth century. As of the crop year 2019/2020, Brazil and Argentina produced 176 million tons which is over half of all world production and these two countries alone will also account for 57% of all soybeans exported in international trade. Brazil alone has now become the world’s leading producer and exporter of soybeans and one of the most important exporters of soybean projects. While the temperate Southeastern states were the original center of soybean production, the opening of the Cerrado has allowed the tropical Center-West region to emerge as the most important source of production. This in turn has opened up new port activity in the Northeastern region. How this new agricultural product evolved in Brazil is the main focus of this chapter.
