Abstract: Abstract This chapter examines the British East India Company’s presence on the Indian Sub-continent and its economic and political influence from the seventeenth to the late eighteenth century. Initially focused on trade, the Company’s evolving presence in India, as it gained permission to establish factories and maintain a military force, is discussed. The weakening of the Mughal Empire after Aurangzeb’s death, leading to significant victories like the Battle of Plassey in 1757, which solidified its dominance over Bengal, is highlighted. The chapter also discusses the economic and political strategies employed by the Company, particularly in Bengal, a region of great prosperity and trade significance. Military dynamics with indigenous states are also explored, emphasising the Company’s advantages in discipline, professionalism, and technology. The chapter covers the Company’s conflicts with Mysore and the development of Madras. The narrative transitions to the British Raj, discussing governance under the Company and the transfer of power to the British Crown after the Indian Mutiny of 1857. It touches on India’s democratic history and the colonial impact on democratic institutions, highlighting legislative acts and reforms. The chapter concludes with the Government of India Act of 1919 and subsequent events leading to India’s independence in 1947. Unlike other European powers, Britain opted for a peaceful transfer of power, influenced by Indian nationalist movements and post-war exhaustion. The chapter also contrasts British colonisation in India with that in other regions, noting India’s longer history of British rule and stronger nationalist movements.
